Nationally renowned author, community leader, and urban educator Baruti Kafele to speak about “School Communities Leading with Equity” in public lecture

Baruti K. Kafele, acclaimed speaker and urban educator, will deliver a public lecture

at the Saint Joe County Public Library Community Learning Center Ballroom on Monday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m.

Titled “School Communities Leading with Equity,” Kafele’s presentation is designed to bring the community together as educators and citizens to better understand issues surrounding inequities in schools and classrooms. The talk is free and open to the public.

“We are honored to have the chance to host Principal Kafele in our schools,” said Dr. Tessa Sutton, assistant superintendent of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the district. “His leadership and outreach has been unparalleled, and we’re pleased to be able to share his wisdom and stories with the South Bend community.”

Ahead of the public presentation, Kafele will spend his day working with SBCSC leaders involved in the “My Brother’s Keeper” (MBK) program. Now in its fourth year in South Bend Schools,  MBK provides targeted resources and support for students ranging from elementary through their high school years.

A public school educator in New Jersey for more than 30 years, Kafele has served as a classroom teacher, a principal, and a popular public speaker. Kafele’s writings involve professional development strategies with focus on positive school climate and cultures, support for at-risk students, and school leadership practices for inspiring schoolwide excellence.
