Kathleen Avery, second-grade teacher at Madison STEAM Academy, was named 2022 South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) Teacher of the Year. The runner-up Teacher of the Year was Pamela Hirschler, fourth-grade teacher at Swanson Traditional School.
In the first in-person ceremony since 2019, Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings, Assistant Superintendent of Academics Brandon White, South Bend Empowerment Zone Chief Dr. Cheryl Camacho, and other district administrators honored 28 nominees from across the district at the Riley High School auditorium. Nominees were selected by their peers in their respective SBCSC schools, designating them as the Teacher of the Year for their school. Of that group of 28, an “honors group” of ten was selected by a group of evaluators, including the runner-up and overall winner. Evaluators include retired and current teachers.
As SBCSC Teacher of the Year, Avery will receive a $2,500 Professional Growth Grant from the South Bend Education Foundation. Avery will also represent the South Bend Community School Corporation at the state level as a 2021-22 Indiana Teacher of the Year candidate.
