Four South Bend Community School Corporation students will graduate high school with associate degrees
SBCSC partnership with Ivy Tech allows high school students to earn college degree while in high school; save money and time
For the first time in South Bend Community Schools’ history, four students are graduating from high school and already have associate college degrees from Ivy Tech.
"It was one of my priorities to enhance our relationship with Ivy Tech and ensure that our students could have the opportunity to earn an associate degree concurrently with high school graduation,” said Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings.
Students split their time between the ASAP program at Ivy Tech and their high schools. This afforded students the opportunity to earn dual credit from Ivy Tech and their high school. The Ivy Tech ASAP program provides South Bend Community Schools’ students the opportunity to enter the workforce or a four-year college ahead of most graduating seniors.
Students not only credit this program with giving them a head start in the workforce and in college, but also with helping them develop as professionals. A common focus was time management and professionalism. The students had to adjust to a college program that has prepared them for self-accountability in the future. The four students all plan on utilizing their associate degrees upon graduation:
Ashley Lara, Clay High School: Graduating with an associate degree in general studies. She plans to attend Columbia College in Chicago to major in film making with a concentration in editing.
Morgan Rankin-Jokerst, Riley High School: Graduating with an associate degree in general studies. He plans to attend Indiana University-South Bend to major in physics.
Josue Reynoso, Riley High School: Graduating with an associate degree of applied science in automotive technology. He plans on entering the workforce and using his education to volunteer in struggling communities.
Kayla Rivera, Clay High School: Graduating with an associate degree in general studies and a certificate in cyber security. She plans to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette to major in cyber security.
