South Bend Community School Corporation High School students win Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
One-hundred forty-two South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) high school students were honored for their work by the 2022 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in Northwest Indiana and Lower Southwest Michigan Art Region. Founded in 1923, the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are known as “the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens.”

Adams High School students received 50 recognitions
-
Clay High School students received 88 recognitions
-
Riley High School students received four recognitions
SBCSC’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) graphic design program, open to all district high school students and housed at Clay High School, was prominently represented among this year’s winners, securing 19 Gold Key Awards, 22 Silver Key Awards, 34 honorable mentions, 24 portfolio awards, and one American Visions Nominee, all awarded to 21 students in the program.
Approximately 5 - 7% of all regional submissions are recognized and considered for national-level recognition. The selection of works by National Medalists will be included in the National Exhibition in New York City. The exhibition includes works that received American Voices and Visions, Gold Medal Portfolio, Silver Medal with Distinction Portfolio, Gold Medal, and direct scholarships.
All Gold Key works and the five American Voices and American Vision nominees from each region automatically advance to national judging. Jurors select work for national recognition based on three criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice.
In the fall, students across the nation submitted nearly 230,000 works to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards from affiliates and region-at-large competitions.
National Awards will be announced on March 17, 2022 at artandwriting.org. See a full list of area winners here.
