South Bend Board of School Trustees Approves

Facilities Master Plan Recommendation

The Board of School Trustees voted on Monday night to approve the Facilities Master Plan recommendation presented by consultants Fanning Howey Associates, Inc., an architecture, interiors, and engineering firm specializing in learning environments,  and their partnering consultant HPM Leadership. The recommended plan for South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) facility usage considers four main components: educational framework, demographics, conditions, and funding. 

The process included a thorough analysis of all district facilities, a State of the Schools report, over 50 internal and external stakeholder meetings, and a number of surveys. The process culminated in a Facilities Master Plan to right-size the district and to create a fiscally responsible plan that allows more funding to go back into Pre-K- 12 classrooms and innovative programs that prepare students to compete globally through college and career preparation. 

“I am grateful for my Board and the difficult decisions they’ve been faced with surrounding these recommendations,” said Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings.“Our intention is to be responsible and considerate stewards of the district’s finances and facilities while prioritizing our students, teachers, curricula and programming. While last night’s vote probably evoked a wide range of emotions among our stakeholders–from approval to disappointment–we all have the same goal: to provide equitable resources to all of our students. 

Our work in carrying out these recommendations begins today. We’re assembling a transition team to provide support and guidance for staff and students as we proceed with these changes. We will continue to invest in Pre-K-12 programming, support our students, teachers and leaders, and expand career opportunities for our learners while improving literacy proficiency and graduation rates.”
