Funds are part of a voluntary local agreement that will reach a total of $500K over five years

The South Bend Community School Corporation has received an annual contribution of $100,000 from the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi as part of the Tribe’s voluntary local agreement with the City of South Bend to share revenue from its Four Winds South Bend casino. This is the third annual contribution the Corporation has received from the Pokagon Band, which will reach a total of $500,000 over five years.

“The generosity of the Pokagon Band continues to enhance and hearten our mission as educators and continuous learners,” said Superintendent Dr. C. Todd Cummings. “In this third year of their gift, our community knows more than ever how deeply beneficial the Pokagon Band’s generosity is to our district. Their partnership is of immense service to our students, and we are grateful for their generosity.”

The gift from the Pokagon Band has been used to help fund the districts’ three dual immersion language programs; the Maritza Robles Dual Language Immersion Programs at both Harrison Elementary and McKinley Elementary Schools, as well as the French Dual Language Immersion Program at Clay International Academy.

“The Pokagon Band is very proud to be able to continue our annual voluntary contributions to the South Bend Community School Corporation, which plays a vital role in serving the community,” said Matthew Wesaw, Tribal Chairman of the Pokagon Band and CEO of the Pokagon Gaming Authority. “Although the challenges due to COVID-19 persist, we must continue to find ways to support individuals and families, especially those with the greatest need. We commend the South Bend Community School Corporation for their continued efforts to serve the community in spite of the current environment.”

Other recipients include the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County, YWCA of North Central Indiana, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, Jobs for America’s Graduates Indiana, the Bowman Creek Project, Beacon Children’s Hospital, South Bend Community School Corporation, and South Bend Venues, Parks & Arts.
