South Bend Community School Corporation to host inaugural IHSAA Unified Track and Field celebration
South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC), Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), and Special Olympics have partnered to bring Unified Track & Field to district schools.
Unified Sports is an internationally sanctioned program founded in 1989 and designed to promote social inclusion for athletes with and without developmental disabilities. Teams are made up of equal Special Olympic and SBCSC athletes. Teams compete together in IHSAA competitions, including track and field and football.
On Saturday, May 1, all four SBCSC high schools’ Unified track teams will compete against one another from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Jackson Field, 5001 S. Miami Rd. in South Bend.
District middle school students are invited to take part in recreational athletic activities at the event.
“We’re thrilled to bring this remarkable partnership to life within our community,” said SBCSC Director of Community Programs and K-12 Athletics, Milt Lee. “This program has been an outstanding means of creating lasting equity among our students, meaningful friendships, and athletic development for all.”
