Fun fair and vaccination clinic added to this year’s event

The annual backpack giveaway for South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) students will take place Saturday, August 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Brown Community Learning Center, 737 W. Beale Street in South Bend.

A free, family fun-fair has been added to this year’s event and will include a dunk tank, obstacle course, balloon animals, cotton candy and more. Additionally, there will be a vaccination clinic offered for students to get caught up on their required vaccinations or to receive a COVID-19 vaccine (age 12 and over). Franciscan Health is sponsoring the vaccination clinic and families are asked to bring a copy of their students’ vaccination records and insurance card if they plan to update their students’ vaccinations.

“With the return to in-person teaching and learning, we really want to kick off this school year with as much excitement and enthusiasm as we can,” said Taylor Williams, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator for SBCSC and lead for this year’s events. “We encourage families to come out and enjoy time together, have some fun at the fair, and pick up backpacks and other supplies while they’re here.”

With support from WNDU, the St. Joseph County Public Library, Goodwill Industries, Franciscan Health, the Education Foundation, and National Bank, some 3,000 backpacks will be distributed. Backpack contents are most appropriate for students in grades K-6, but all ages are welcome. Families have the option to receive backpacks via drive-through or walk up.

The Empowerment Zone Schools will hold their backpack giveaways at each individual school on Monday, August 9 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Families can receive their backpacks at Coquillard, Harrison, Warren, or Wilson Elementary Schools or at Navarre Middle School on Monday.
