Highlights from EDGE 2013

Girls participating in a presentation, "Women in Technology", about how awesome a career can be in the technology field.

Everyone built a new computer from the ground up. They learned about the components in a computer and what each one does. After the computers were built, they installed Windows 7 and tested each system. Everyone had a working, successful build! (The young lady standing and helping is a former CTE I.T. student.)

Some of the girls wanted to learn Scratch, a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations. They made some very impressive projects in a short amount of time! (The young man helping is a former CTE I.T. student).

Several girls (and all the boys) made network patch cables. We gave them cable strippers and crimper tools along with RJ-45 crimps and unshielded twisted pair Category 5e cable. They followed a wiring schematic and each made a tested and working cable. (The young man helping is a former CTE I.T. student.)

Everyone constructed an electronic cricket that chirps when the lights go out. They learned how to identify electronic components and solder the components onto a printed circuit board. Everyone's cricket "chirped" the first time they powered on!

Some of the girls wanted to disassemble and reassemble a laptop computer. They disassembled the computer all the way down to the bare frame and reassembled with everything working perfectly when they powered up!

This year's soldering project was significanlty more difficult to assemble than last year and the girls and boys really enjoyed assembling this kit. The project we chose was a Persistence of Vision (POV) kit. Persistance of Vision is the idea that as images change they will be retained by your brain for a fraction of a second. Successive images, if changed fast enough, will be combined to paint a complete picture. This project includes the priciples of both the phi phenomenon and the beta phenomenon to create what appears to be an an optical illusion.

Computer build is a popular activity and most of the campers constructed a computer from new parts. The computers were built from the ground up and every computer worked when the campers were finished.

It's amazing how creative kids are at this age. Many of the campers wanted to spend some time with Web design, programming and animation. The campers used Pencil, Alice, Scratch, and Pencilcode.net over the course of the camp.

Ask the boys what they would like to do for an activity and for many the first thing they ask is "Can we take apart an Xbox?" So that's exactly what we did.
